Let's break it down a little to make the process easier. What are the different types of space heaters?
- Radiant heaters emit infrared radiation that directly warms the objects in front of the heaters (rather than the surrounding air). If you only need heat by a desk or in a small section of a room, a radiant heater is quiet and will use very little power.
- Forced-air heaters use a fan to blow air that has been warmed by metal or ceramic heating elements. A forced-air heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but can be noisy.
- Convection heaters draw cold air from the floor; the air is warmed by heating coils and emitted from the top of the heater. A convection heater is appropriate for quickly heating up a small- to medium-sized room, but also can be noisy.
- Radiators work by heating oil enclosed in a reservoir, gradually heating the surrounding air. If heating speed isn't an issue, you might want to opt for a radiator. These are extremely quiet and effective--perfect for bedrooms.
Should I buy an electric or a combustion model? If you want a heater that will be available in emergencies, or that can heat areas larger than a single room, choose a "combustion" model--one that is powered by a gas or fuel like propane, kerosene, natural gas, or diesel. Which fuel type you choose depends largely on convenience and local availability. For example, diesel would be appropriate for a heater you take with you on long car trips. How powerful a heater do I need? Heaters are rated by BTU, which stands for British Thermal Unit (the amount of heat needed to heat one pound of water by 1 degree F). To find out how many BTU you need:
- Calculate the volume of the space to be heated by multiplying square footage by height.
- Multiply that number by 4 if your insulation is poor, 3 if it's average, or 2 if it's good.
The resulting number is a ballpark figure for how many BTU you'll need.Do space heaters cost a lot to operate? As a general rule, electric space heaters are more expensive to use than combustion models. To ensure energy efficiency, a thermostat is a must-have feature for any heater. For radiant heaters, models with a 360 degree heating surface can heat larger spaces. If you need a forced-air heater, models with ceramic elements tend to be more efficient. Are space heaters a fire hazard? Space heaters are implicated in about 25,000 residential fires every year. To ensure proper safety, always follow the manufacturer's usage instructions and fill out the warranty card to receive informational updates from the manufacturer. Also, look for extra safety features such as an automatic shutoff switch that can shut down the unit if, for example, it gets upended. In addition, choose a model where the heating element is adequately enclosed within the unit.

save your money there junk January 7, 2010 W. Roth (mercer.pa.usa) bought new at amazon 2/26/08 used it one day and hasn't worked since.couldn't ship it back cause it had fuel in it at one time,no mr heater repair shops in our area wouldn't fix it and told me to scrap it.it would cost more to fix than I paid
Mr. Heater MH125KT November 30, 2009 Vincent J. Forte (Maryland) I use this heater to heat a 1500 shop. It works well, was easy to assemble and is not too loud. The electric ignition and thermostat shut off are great features.
Mr. Heater MH125KT August 3, 2008 J. Smith (West-central MA) Have owned this item for over 4 years. Just recently had the ignition module fail (ignition coil), so I replaced the module & while I was in there, replaced the hoses (which were all cracked/split & ready to leak at any moment),the igniter electrode & the air gauge, which was broken the day I received the unit. No surprise, as all parts stamped "made in China". But the unit works great after you play around with the air nozzle adjustment screw to get a good burn, but not so good as to trip the overheat switch, which shuts the unit off until you walk over there & press the reset button -- a PITA if your in the middle of a time-sensitive job. Once that was worked out, you'll only need to fine tune it for extreme cold (thicker air). Not worth the $300 I paid in March 2004.
FYI: Unit will NOT run on DIESEL -- KEROSENE ONLY. Been there, done that! Diesel is too thick & slows the motor down gradually until it eventually stops (if you let it run that long, you'll probably either burn the motor out or melt the pump vanes). Drain out diesel & refill with Kerosene & it works fine again.
...and the handles are poorly made & need to be welded back together since they broke off. I guess you have to shell out the big bucks for quality these days!
Very happy with Heater February 16, 2007 D. Lint (PA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Very good experience. Ordered this heater on 2/13/07 at night and UPS had it at my house on 2/15/07 in the morning. Works great. I did see it listed somewhere else for a few dollars less but that place didn't have any. This was my first purchase from Amazon and I was a little leary but it worked out great.
A very satisfied customer of Ace Hardware January 6, 2007 Bill Lundquist (Minnesota) I bought this heater from my Ace store three years ago and I love it!! This is a great heater and performs flawlessly. Thermostat works great. I'm remodelling my old garage and I can work whenever I want as Mr. Heater is always there waiting to help me out. I use only kerosene for fuel as its basically odor free. If I do get a whiff of kerosene I know its getting low on fuel. Pick it up at Ace and put it to work today! Its cheaper there too. Amazon is great, but there are some items that I feel are better purchased locally and this is a case in point.
